Where is Tom Herman Now?

March 18, 2024

After his stint at Texas ended, Tom Herman stepped away from the college coaching scene. He wanted to learn more about the NFL, so he took a job with the Chicago Bears as an analyst. He stayed on for one season and learned what it was like to call games on CBS Sports Network.

Herman was adamant that when he returned to the game, it wouldn’t be as a coordinator or position coach. He was ready to lead a program. His first opportunity came at FAU, a school that had just lost Lane Kiffin to the UCLA coaching staff. Herman was a low risk, high reward hire.

The Owls are part of the American Athletic Conference, and Herman’s teams have finished in the top half of the league’s standings each of his two seasons there. His offenses are explosive and balanced, and the team has a solid recruiting base. He’s a smart recruiter, an offensive mastermind and a savvy leader.

Herman has six years of head coaching experience, and he’s a proven winner. He has a winning record, a perfect bowl record and is an expert at building powerhouse programs. Despite a few missteps, Herman is still a hot name on the college football circuit. He’s been linked to a number of openings, including the one at South Carolina after the Gamecocks fired Willie Taggart. But Herman hasn’t forgotten where he came from and is focused on making FAU a consistent winner.
