The Black Pearl was Jack Sparrow’s ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Originally known as the Wicked Wench the vessel was owned by Cutler Beckett and was part of the East India Trading Company fleet. When Jack crossed Beckett and the company he was branded with a P and as punishment had his beloved ship set afire and sunk. This sparked a deal with Davy Jones to allow him thirteen years of service aboard the Flying Dutchman in exchange for his soul and one hundred years as captain of the Wench.
After his time on the Dutchman Jack reclaimed his original ship and it became the Black Pearl again. He enlisted the help of his old crew, including Pintel, Ragetti, Cotton’s parrot and Elizabeth and they left for Tortuga. On arrival they were greeted by Tia Dalma, who asked them if they would sail to the ends of the Earth and beyond to retrieve Jack and his precious Pearl. They agreed, and so the journey began.
The Pearl is a moderately armed ship that carries 32 twelve-pound cannons; 18 on the gun deck and 14 on the upper deck. It also has a unique ability to hide in the sea at night as long as all of the ship’s lamps are blown out. This can prove invaluable in combat and allows the Black Pearl to sneak into Port Royal undetected.
