Where is Richard Hutchins Now?

March 16, 2024

In a story that has more serendipity than a John Cusack movie, homeless artist Richard Hutchins is now living the American dream. A chance encounter with former music manager and philanthropist Charlie “Rocket” Jabaley at a Ralphs grocery store in Los Angeles a few weeks ago has changed his life forever. The two men spoke for the first time when Rocket saw Richard painting on a cart in front of the store.

Rocket took a liking to Hutchins and decided to use his connections on social media to get him off the streets. He created a website for him to sell his art and set up an event at the Sofitel hotel in Beverly Hills to showcase it. The launch of the website and gallery event went viral, and within four hours, Hutchins had made $50,000. Rocket says he has since sold over $200,000 worth of paintings to people like Oprah Winfrey, rappers 2 Chainz and Whiz Khalifa, and celebrity host Steve Harvey.

Rocket and his team are now helping Hutchins move into a Tarzana apartment, which is light years away from the Skid Row he once called home. Rocket himself has had some challenging times in his life, but he said he wants to use his success and influence to help others pursue their dreams.
