Fairborn man Reid Duran was at the center of a shocking case involving an attempted kidnapping at St. Brigid Catholic School in Xenia. The alarming incident unfolded when Duran attended a back-to-school event, posing as the father of a kindergartner. This raised suspicions among the child's real parents, leading them to contact the authorities. The situation further deteriorated when Reid Duran admitted to planning to kidnap a child for sexual purposes, intending to use candy laced with tranquilizers; fortunately, he was never alone with any child. Despite being charged, Duran was found not guilty of attempted kidnapping by reason of insanity, sparking widespread concern and discussion around his actions and intentions.
In a courtroom analysis, the jury delivered a split verdict for Reid Duran's actions. While he was acquitted of attempted kidnapping due to reasons of insanity, Duran was found guilty of felonious assault and escape. These charges were primarily based on a surveillance video from the police station, where Duran was caught trying to stab a Xenia officer with a pen during an interview. This violent outburst led to Duran’s conviction and subsequent sentencing to 8 to 12 years in prison. Reid Duran's actions at the school and later attempts to escape police custody revealed a clear pattern of dangerous behavior, raising questions about where is Reid Duran now in terms of his criminal accountability and mental health management.
Despite the not guilty verdict for attempted kidnapping by reason of insanity, the repercussions of Reid Duran's other criminal actions were significant. The charges for assaulting a peace officer and his attempts to escape police custody result in a cumulative sentence that reflects the severity of his actions. This decision was underscored by the presentation of compelling evidence, including the testimony of the school’s principal and the chilling surveillance footage. Duran's defense argued that his severe mental illness and the lack of medication influenced his behavior. Nonetheless, Greene County Prosecutor David D. Hayes emphasized the threat Duran posed, particularly his intent to kidnap and sexually assault a child, as justification for seeking the maximum sentence.
Currently, Reid Duran is serving his sentence, with an appeal of his sentence filed in Greene County Commons Pleas Court on July 3. As the case progresses through legal channels, discussions around mental illness, criminal justice, and public safety continue to unfold. This case raises critical concerns, not just about the individual actions of Duran, but also about the broader implications for community safety and mental health considerations within the legal system. As Duran awaits the outcome of his appeal, the community remains vigilant, reflecting on how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.

Reid Duran is a very sick and spineless individual person. He needs more than 12 years in prison if he's going to do something like this! I, too, am a parent. I'm a cat parent so if anything should ever happen to my kitten, he sure would be a prime candidate for the crime of animal cruelty. I feel for all the parents at that school in Ohio, and I would be angry and upset too. Parents of that kindergartener, I feel for the both of you and sorry about the stress you went through on that ice cream social day 8/22/16. I would have stopped the predator had I been there and I ever knew all about him.
