Rachel Buffett, the former Disney princess whose fiance is on death row for a double murder, has been convicted of lying to help him cover up his crimes. She has been sentenced to 44 months in prison.
Buffett sat stoically in her blue jail uniform as the parents of Sam Herr, 26, and Julie Kibuishi, 23, made statements at her sentencing hearing. "She lied to the police," Steve Herr told Judge Sheila Hanson, who ordered her to spend up to two years behind bars. "She lied to her friends, she lied to the media and she even appeared on national television shows like 'Dr. Phil' and 'Dateline' proclaiming her innocence."
In interviews with police after the murders, Buffett denied having any involvement in the 2010 killings of her neighbors, who were both Army veterans. But newly obtained interview tapes show that she lied to investigators, according to the Orange County Register.
During the trial, acquaintances testified that Buffett and Wozniak were acting strangely around the time of the murders. In addition, the prosecutors said Buffett used her financial stability to try to cover up Wozniak's role in the deaths of her neighbors. The pair were killed in an apparent robbery to steal their cash. The couple also threw their bodies into an attic and left them to be ravaged by wild animals. This week on Sleuth we're talking to the father of Sam Herr, who is begging the court for maximum prison time for his son's killer, Rachel Buffett.
