Where is Marcelo Now?

March 15, 2024

After more than 15 years at Real Madrid, Marcelo put an end to his career with the club by lifting his final Champions League trophy. The Brazilian fullback came to the Santiago Bernabeu as an unknown but left as one of the most recognizable names in world football. He won 25 major titles in 14 seasons and became a club captain after Sergio Ramos left for PSG.

The 34-year-old has been a sporadic presence this season and was replaced as Madrid's fullback by Ferland Mendy, who has been excellent this campaign. He has been struggling with a leg injury but appears to be close to returning and could feature for the final weekend of La Liga play, which would be his last at the Bernabeu.

During his final weeks at the club, Marcelo sat down for an interview with ESPN journalist Martin Ainstein in his 'Diarios De Bicicleta' programme. He spoke about the difficulty of watching games from the bench and the pride he took in putting his team before himself.

After his contract ended with Real Madrid, the defender went on to sign for Olympiacos in the Greek Super League. His stay in Athens hasn't gone exactly to plan but the veteran seems determined to find a new home before the season ends. Despite rumours that he is considering offers from the MLS and Middle East, sources claim Marcelo wants to return to his homeland Brazil for the final few years of his career.
