In May 2012, Luka Magnotta filmed himself stabbing Chinese international student Jun Lin to death and dismembering him before posting the video online. The killing and dismemberment spurred a police manhunt, leading to Magnotta's arrest at an internet café in Berlin. He was returned to Canada and sentenced to life in prison. His story became an international sensation, and his mother, Anna Yourkin, devoted much of her time to promoting his case in hopes that it would be an example for others with a similar history.

Despite being locked up, Magnotta never stopped trying to find a way out of prison. He was convicted in 2014 of first degree murder, publishing obscene and indecent material, criminally harassing the Prime Minister of Canada and mailing indecent and obscene material. He is currently serving his life sentence at the Archambault Institution in Quebec.

Magnotta, born Eric Clinton Kirk Newman on July 24, 1982 in Scarborough, Ontario, grew up as the son of Anna Yourkin and Donald Newman. He later changed his name to Luka Rocco Magnotta. He began appearing in gay pornographic videos and occasionally worked as a male escort. He also appeared in a 2005 issue of Toronto's Fab magazine as a pin-up model under the alias Jimmy. He had multiple cosmetic surgeries and auditioned for Slice network's show Plastic Makes Perfect in February 2008.
