Where is general stephen townsend now

General Stephen Townsend, commander of U.S. Africa Command, visited West Africa Nov. 15-19 to meet with African leaders and chiefs of defense to discuss security issues across the region. He also met with service members stationed at a Cooperative Security Location in Manda Bay, Kenya, and with command senior enlisted leader Sgt. Maj. Richard Thresher, who accompanied Townsend to Kenya and Somalia.

In his more than 30 years of military experience, Townsend has led and commanded at every echelon from platoon to corps and joint task force level, including battalion and brigade commands (3-2 Stryker Brigade, Task Force Arrowhead), division command in Iraq (10th Mountain Division) and the War in Afghanistan as Commander, Combined/Joint Task Force-Inherent Resolve. He has soldiered with four regiments — the 505th Parachute Infantry, the 21st and 31st Infantry Regiments, and the 75th Ranger Regiment — and five divisions including the 82nd Airborne Division, 7th Infantry Division, 78th Division (Training Support), and the 10th Mountain Division.

During his visit, Townsend shared that ISIS and al-Qaida are using different strategies in Africa to create the conditions for their respective aims – ISIS is more direct, more in your face and aggressive, while al-Qaida is a little bit more patient, trying to carve out space to build influence. He noted that he believes the future of the continent — home to 13 of the world’s 25 fastest growing economies, holds resources critical to 21st century progress, and is at a pivotal point in its history – will have an impact on global stability.
