Edward (“Ed”) Orgeron Jr. was born on July 27, 1961, in Larose, Louisiana, to Edward “Ba Ba” Orgeron Sr. and Cornelia “Co Co” Orgeron. Growing up in a family of Cajun descent, Orgeron's early life was shaped by a community of hunters, fishers, and cooks.

Childhood and High School

Despite breaking his leg in the second grade, Orgeron was dedicated to sports, learning to play football using crutches and a cast. He attended South Lafourche High School, where he played alongside future NFL quarterback Bobby Hebert and contributed to the 1977 state championship team.

College Football

Initially enrolling at LSU, Orgeron transferred to Northwestern State University due to homesickness. His college football years laid the foundation for his future coaching career.

Early Coaching Career

Initial Coaching Roles

Orgeron began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Northwestern State in 1984. He subsequently took on roles at McNeese State, University of Arkansas, and University of Miami. However, personal challenges in the early 1990s, including a restraining order and an arrest, forced him to take a break from coaching to focus on his personal issues.

Professional Coaching Career

University of Miami

As the defensive line coach, Orgeron helped the team secure two national championships and recruited notable players, including Dwayne Johnson, known as "The Rock."

USC Stints

Orgeron was initially hired in 1998 and later took on additional roles under Pete Carroll, such as Recruiting Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach. He returned in 2010 as an assistant coach and later served as interim head coach, applying a more paternalistic coaching approach.

Ole Miss Head Coach

Hired in 2005, Orgeron faced significant offensive struggles, leading to staff changes and poor team performance, culminating in his firing after the 2007 season.

New Orleans Saints and University of Tennessee

Orgeron joined the NFL as the defensive line coach for the Saints but later moved to Tennessee, where he served as associate head coach, recruiting coordinator, and defensive line coach under Lane Kiffin.

LSU

Ed Orgeron became interim head coach of LSU in 2016 and was named head coach later that year. Under his leadership, LSU achieved a historic undefeated season and a national championship in 2019, thanks to standout players and innovative coaching strategies. However, the 2020 season was notably disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and personal allegations followed by team performance issues led to a mutual agreement for Orgeron to part ways with LSU in 2021.
