A photo of a determined teen walking to school in his graduation gown went viral, bringing him a new car, some much needed financial support, and a full scholarship to Jacksonville University. But Corey Patrick still has one more goal to achieve before he starts his future career.
Corey’s story began when his family moved to another part of town before his senior year, and they didn’t have a car. But Corey knew he wanted to finish high school with his friends, so he decided to get up at 4:30 every morning and make the 90-minute bus ride to Tarrant High in Birmingham, Alabama. On his last day of high school, he walked to the bus stop wearing his cap and gown, just as he had done each and every day during his final year.
Bus driver Dee Beasely took a picture of the teen and posted it to social media, where it went viral with thousands of shares. It caught the attention of radio personality Rickey Smiley, and he invited Corey on his show at 95.7 JAMZ.
As he walked into the studio, the teen remained humble and shy, but his face lit up when Smiley presented him with a brand-new car, and he promised to help him with the insurance and getting a license. He also told the teen that he would be able to attend any university within driving distance thanks to the generosity of so many.
