Where is Byron Leftwich Coaching Now?

April 2, 2024

Once upon a time, former Jaguars quarterback Byron Leftwich was the hot coaching candidate du jour. The Jags, who drafted him in the first round of the 2003 draft, were ready to go all-in on the former Patriots backup with a view towards making him their next head coach. But Leftwich ultimately rescinded his interview with Jacksonville and went on to spend five seasons as an NFL offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won two Super Bowls (including one with the very same Tom Brady who knocked the Jags out of the playoffs 15 years ago).

But the Bucs fired Leftwich in 2022 after their offense dipped from the league's top-three to 25th in scoring over the course of the year. Now, the 43-year-old is seeking new employment and has reportedly reached out to the Pittsburgh Steelers about joining their coaching staff, according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic.

The Steelers, who currently rank eighth in the NFL in scoring (12.4 points per game) with Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada in charge of the unit, certainly could use a boost on that side of the ball. However, bringing in a former Buccaneers OC who isn't in the midst of a Super Bowl run seems like a strange fit. After all, it would seem like a waste of resources to hire a former play-caller who has already won the big game once. That said, perhaps the Steelers will take a look at some other candidates before going all-in on Leftwich.
