When Inventing Anna's Anna Sorokin found out about the con man she married, she contacted authorities and he ended up serving jail time for impersonating a police officer and grand theft. He was sentenced to one year in prison and five years of probation in 2017. While he's no longer a criminal, many who have seen the docuseries are still wary that Strangis may be continuing to scam others.
The New York Post reports that Strangis pleaded guilty to grand larceny, criminal tax fraud, and scheme to defraud in 2017 after stealing more than $1 million from Sarma Melngailis and her restaurant, Pure Food and Wine. He was arrested in 2016 after he and Melngailis were found in a hotel room in Tennessee. They were both facing unpaid wage lawsuits, and she claims Strangis told her he had tons of money stashed away and could pay off the debts. He allegedly kept asking her for more and even demanded access to her email, phone, and bank account. She also claimed he promised her they would be transported into some sort of utopia after she gave him her money.
In the aftermath of the scandal, he disappeared from the public eye and Melngailis filed for divorce. However, she has been active on social media and is currently trying to put her life together again. As for Strangis, he's now 42 years old and is still on his five-year probation, which should end in 2022.
