Susan Backlinie is an American former actress and stuntwoman best known for her role as Chrissie Watkins, the first shark victim in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film Jaws. Her appearance in the movie took three days to shoot, with Backlinie strapped into a harness while crew members struggled to get the desired effects. She also appeared in a pictorial called The Lady and the Lion in the January 1973 issue of Penthouse magazine.

When co-star Richard Dreyfuss saw the final product, he was stunned by Backlinie’s startled reaction and anguished screams, noting that her performance “brought a whole new level to horror movies.” She continued her acting career with roles in such films as the Christopher George drama Day of the Animals and Dan Aykroyd’s action picture 1941.

Backlinie has a daughter and resides in Ventura, California. In recent months, she has been spotted running errands in the area ahead of the upcoming 47th anniversary of the release of Jaws.
