Madden was born on June 18th, 1986 in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, Scotland to a schoolteacher mother and a firefighter father. He grew up with his two sisters, Cara and Lauren. Madden was a shy boy who was encouraged to take up acting by his parents. He went on to study at Castlehead High School and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.
He began his acting career in 2000 with the film Complicity. Later, he played Romeo in the stage production of Shakespeare's play at the Royal Exchange Theatre and The Spook Who Sat by the Door at the Royal Court Theatre. He also starred in the miniseries Klondike, A Promise and Sirens before portraying the character of David Budd in Bodyguard. He has subsequently been a part of several films including 1917, From Now on and Elton John's Rocketman.
