Mani Ratnam unveiled the first song of his magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan, titled Ponni Nadhi at a grand launch event in Chennai. The lyrics of this beautiful song capture the beauty of the Cauvery river, on which the film is based. Sung by Alphons Joseph, AR Rahman and Bamba Bakya, the song is penned by Ilango Krishnan.
The film is an adaptation of the classic novel series by Amarar Kalki and stars Karthi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Jayam Ravi, R Sarathkumar and Vikram Prabhu in pivotal roles. The music of the film is composed by Oscar winner AR Rahman.
Vairamuthu was the lyricist for this project initially but he had to step down due to controversies. This prompted the production house to try out new lyricists and they chose Ilango Krishnan. The lyricist has good grasp of the Tamil literature and the Chola history.
However, the music of this song lacks a period feel and is similar to one of his earlier compositions. This has irked some of his fans who are unhappy with the decision to drop Vairamuthu. They also feel that the lyricist should have used ancient words instead of using colloquial language. They believe that the film is about a period that happened more than 1,000 years ago and not a contemporary issue. The film is all set to hit the theatres this week. Stay tuned for more updates.
