Alexandra Pesic thought she had found the man of her dreams when she married Joe. However, she soon discovered that he brought much more than just a life partner – he brought her mother-in-law, Jelka, who terrorized and murdered her. This true story is featured on the new series Killer Relationships With Faith Jenkins season 1 episode 3.
Alex was a dental hygienist who lived in Coquitlam, a suburb of Vancouver, Canada. Her beauty attracted a lot of attention, and she even participated in the Miss Canada pageant. After she and her mom attended an open house, they met another Yugoslavian lady named Jelka. Later on, she took her car to Jelka’s service center and had her first encounter with her son, Joe.
The couple began dating and after a month of courting, they decided to get married. Alex had her reservations about marrying Joe, but they exchanged their wedding vows on June 11, 1988.
Jelka’s controlling and nitpicking behaviour drove Alexandra mad. She even got jealous when Jelka invited her friends to a dinner party, which Alex had planned. Jelka also used a true crime book to plot against her daughter-in-law.
In 1993, Jelka and three men were found guilty of first-degree murder and received life sentences. However, they were only incarcerated for 25 years as their victim had an alibi. Joe was not charged because he had a justification for the wrongdoing, and he never tried to battle for custody of his son Brandon. The child now lives with his maternal grandmother.
