Body Shop Lyrics Meaning

July 31, 2023

When Sam Smith released “Body Shop” featuring Kim Petras, many assumed it was a song about infidelity because of the lyrics: "Mummy don't know daddy's getting hot/At the Body shop/Doin' something unholy.”

In the context of this particular story, the Body Shop reference refers to a brothel or strip club. In the chorus, Smith is rapping about a married man who cheats on his wife by visiting a place called the Body Shop, which sounds like an auto repair shop but is really a sex club. Kim's verse plays off the same theme of a married man who cheats by sleeping with sex workers at the Body Shop, but she does it from the perspective of the sex worker.

The erotic clip for the song was directed by Floria Sigismondi and features RuPaul's Drag Race stars Violet Chachki and Matty Henrquez as dancers who perform at a cabaret-style venue. French dance collective (LA)HORDE choreographed the sexy clip, which was inspired by classics like Moulin Rouge and A Clockwork Orange.

In addition to the sexual imagery, the lyrics also reference Satan worship. Some people found this to be offensive, but the artists intended for it to add an edge to the track. In the end, the song is an indictment of infidelity and how it can destroy a family. The devil visuals are meant to emphasize how wrong this behavior is and to show how God will punish the cheaters.
