AppleCare & Beyond: Best iPhone Insurance to Consider

September 15, 2023

When you visit the Apple store to purchase a brand new iPhone or iPad, you are only informed about AppleCare or AppleCare+. But is this the only insurance option available for your iPhone and other Apple devices? Is it truly the best? Let’s explore all the insurance options available to iPhone users so you can make an informed decision.

AppleCare and AppleCare+

AppleCare and AppleCare+ are services offered by Apple, but they cater to different device types and levels of coverage. The key differences are:

  • AppleCare:

AppleCare is primarily an extended warranty and support program. It doesn’t include coverage for accidental damage but extends the standard warranty coverage for Apple products. In addition to the iPhone, AppleCare is available for iPads and Mac computers.

Users don’t have to pay a service fee when seeking repairs if the issue is eligible. The coverage period varies but typically extends the warranty to 2 or 3 years from the purchase date. With this insurance program, you will get support for technical issues but no coverage for accidental damages.

  • AppleCare+:

AppleCare+ includes all the benefits of AppleCare, plus offers coverage for accidental damage, including spills and drops. The insurance program is available for iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPads. If you need to repair your device for accidental damage, AppleCare+ requires users to pay a fee depending on the damage type and the device.

The insurance program extends the warranty and offers accidental damage coverage for 2 to 3 years. It also includes access to customer support for technical issues and covers up to two incidents of accidental damage within the coverage period.

So, the main difference between AppleCare and AppleCare+ is that the latter includes coverage for accidental damage while the former simply extends the warranty. Is Apple Care Plus worth it? Yes, because it is the more comprehensive option.

AppleCare Alternatives in the USA

There are standalone insurance services available, along with insurance programs via your carrier.

Standalone services:

  • Asurion - This insurance service covers loss, theft, and damage. They partner with carriers like Cricket, Verizon, US Cellular, and AT&T. Users are eligible to enroll within thirty days of buying or upgrading an iPhone. While the rates are higher than average, the deductibles are low. However, it depends on the iPhone model.
  • SquareTrade - One phone is insured for $9 per month, and you can cover four phones by paying $20 a month. Since the coverage follows you instead of your phone, you don’t need to re-apply for insurance when you get a new iPhone. You have to pay a $149 deductible for repairs. However, it doesn’t cover theft or loss.
  • AKKO - AKKO provides insurance, which varies according to the model. It can be $5 or $12 a month. The insurance service lets users cover one phone and up to twenty-five other items, including game consoles, laptops, cameras, etc., for $15 per month. Depending on the claim, deductibles are between $29 to $99. The service covers theft and loss as well.

Insurance through phone carriers:

  • Verizon - Verizon offers coverage through a partnership with Asurion. The pricing depends on the phone model, and family plans are also available.
  • AT&T - The company offers a Protect Advantage Plan for $14 to $17 a month, depending on the phone model. Users have to pay a $29 deductible for screen repairs, and if you need other replacements or repairs, the deductible is higher. The insurance program covers accidental damage, loss, and theft.

AppleCare Alternatives in the UK

Similar to the US, iPhone users in the UK can check out several vendors offering flexible and affordable packages to protect their iPhone. The popular options are:

  • Gadget Cover - The insurance service costs £6.45 a month, and you have to pay an extra £100 for theft or loss.
  • Protect Your Bubble - The insurance program costs £6.99 a month but charges an extra few pounds in case of theft or damage.
  • Simple Insurance - The insurance program allows users to pay upfront for the coverage and then make savings. You can choose from different plans.

Please note that insuring older handsets may cost you more than newer models. So, you must check with the insurance company and compare the different plans. You must also check whether they offer family plans in case you have more people using iPhones in your home.

The Bottom Line

These are all the different insurance options when it comes to protecting your iPhone. It is important to compare them, check their plans and packages, note their price, and then make an informed decision. However, it is essential to note that AppleCare and AppleCare+ are not your only options when it comes to insuring your iPhone. Ensure to do your due diligence and then choose the right insurance package for yourself and your family.
